WHY C-SECTIONS?

When thinking about what to do for the semester project, many ideas came to mind. I finally settled on creating a resource for C-section information. This was because of research that I had done that found that black women were more likely to have a C-section and suffer complications following that C-section. I remembered the discourse that surrounded C-section births in my household and were echoed throughout the community. "Did you hear she had a C-section, so lazy". I remembered when my mother was carrying my siblings or any family member was pregnant, prayers against C-sections would arise each time. Canada being a multi-cultural country has a mix of women who come from backgrounds such as this that demonize C-sections. Undergoing a C-section, even in the event that it would save their life and that of their child, can be mentally difficult for women who come from these backgrounds. It is important to make them aware that C-sections are valid births and the most important thing is their well-being and that of the child. Doulas can play a vital role in providing this support before and after the C-section. Having a support person outside of family can help alleviate some of the feelings of guilt and inadequacy.
