Cesarean section

Before we begin, it is important to first state that ALL BIRTHS ARE VALID. CESAREAN SECTION BIRTHS ARE VALID.

Now, what is a C-section? A C-section is a method of fetal delivery through an open abdominal incision and an incision in the uterus.  It is recommended if the birthing parent has had a prior C-section, if the birthing parent has herpes simplex or HIV and a variety of other reasons. In most cases, the birthing parent is awake during the procedure.

There are two types of C-sections: Planned and Unplanned C-sections

Planned C-section: This occurs when the physician is aware of a known medical problem that may make labour dangerous for the birthing parent and the baby. Some examples include

  • Conditions that the birthing parent may have that will make vaginal birth stressful.

  • Infections such as HIV or open genital sores that can be passed on to the baby

  • If the birthing parent is carrying more than one child.

Unplanned C-section: This happens when there is a problem before or during labour. This is sometimes an emergency. Some examples include

  • If the baby is showing signs of distress

  • If the labor is slow and is not progressing.
